Northern Lights Delta 8 – Hemp Flower Genetics

The Northern Lights strain emerged from the Netherlands in 1985, but nobody is 100% sure of its genetic background. Researchers believe it came from crossbreeding Afghan and Thai landrace strains. Landrace strains, grown without human selective breeding efforts, represent the oldest varieties of hemp on Earth.

Northern Lights is so popular that many farmers have used it to breed new strains. Even if you’ve never tried Northern Lights, you might be a fan of its descendants, including Super Silver Haze, Shiva Skunk, and Chronic. If you enjoy those, you’ll love their mother strain, Northern Lights.

Strain Type

Northern Lights is an Indica-dominant Hybrid. Indica strains are famous for their deeply relaxing effects. A pure Indica strain can even have a sedative impact on the consumer. However, Northern Lights has a streak of Sativa genetics as well that balances out the effects.

Flower Appearance

Northern Lights exhibits dense green buds with streaks of bright orange and deep purple. The flower is sticky to the touch, thanks to the dense layer of trichomes on its surface. Trichomes look like crystal-white hairs, and they are powerhouses for cannabinoid production. A high trichome count is a good sign of high-quality hemp flower.

Aroma & Flavor

When you pop the top of a jar of Hollyweed’s premium Northern Lights hemp flower, you immediately notice its unique and powerful aroma. This strain has a strong, earthy scent with notes of grass and pine tree sap.

The smoke delivers a bold flavor profile. It blends sweet and spicy notes with just a hint of citrus. Remember the trichomes we just spoke about? They also contain terpenes, the compounds that create smell and taste. Look for flower with a large number of trichomes because it should have a stronger flavor, aroma, and potency.

Terpenes

As we hinted, terpenes are natural chemicals that create flavor and aroma. You can find terpenes in most plant species, but they are especially prevalent in tree sap, citrus zest, and, of course, cannabis flower.

Each hemp strain has a unique terpene profile that informs its taste and effects. The primary terpenes in Northern Lights are myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, humulene, and pinene. Let’s get to know each of these terpenes a little bit better.

Myrcene

Myrcene is the most common terpene in the cannabis plant. No matter what strain of Delta 8 flower you choose, there’s bound to be some myrcene in it. It has an earthy flavor and musky aroma that contributes to the distinct “funky” smell of cannabis. Myrcene also appears in common fruits and culinary herbs, including:

  • Thyme
  • Mango
  • Verbena
  • Hops
  • Lemongrass
  • Bay leaf
  • Cardamom

Beta-Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene is the second-most common terpene in cannabis after myrcene. It is well-known for its slightly spicy, peppery aroma and flavor. You can also find beta-caryophyllene in the spice aisle of any grocery store, as it is abundant in these plants:

  • Oregano
  • Cinnamon
  • Black pepper
  • Rosemary
  • Caraway

Humulene

If you love beer, particularly IPAs, you’re already a fan of humulene. It is the most common terpene in beer hops (Humulus lupulus). Curiously enough, hops is actually the closest genetic relative to the cannabis plant! Humulene shows up all over the kitchen, including in these common ingredients:

  • Beer hops
  • Sage
  • Ginseng
  • Cloves

Pinene

Pinene is the most abundant terpene in the natural world. It’s not as common in cannabis flower as myrcene and caryophyllene are, but it fills forests around the world. As its name suggests, pinene is abundant in pine trees and other conifers. If you love the smell of Christmas trees, you love pinene. Pinene also appears in these plants:

  • Conifers
  • Rosemary
  • Lavender
  • Frankincense (Boswellia)
  • Juniper
  • Camphor

Suggestions for Use

Northern Lights is an Indica-dominant strain, and like most Indica varieties, it is famous for its relaxing effects that are perfect for nighttime use. The deep sense of mental and physical calm is just what you need to wind down after a long day and get ready for bed.

Another reason to choose Delta 8 flower is the social experience. Many other Delta 8 products, like edibles and tinctures, are perfect for personal enjoyment, but flower is easy to share. Just pass the joint to your neighbor and let the good vibes go around!

You should not drive or operate heavy machinery while feeling the effects of Delta 8 THC. You should also be aware that Delta 8 will show up as THC on most standard drug tests. If you anticipate taking a drug test in the near future, it would be better to try Hollyweed’s Northern Lights CBD flower, which is highly unlikely to cause the same problem.

The statements regarding these products have not been evaluated by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any serious medical condition or replace prescription medications. Ask your doctor’s advice before use.

We do not ship Delta 8 THC products to the following states where state laws and local laws conflict with federal law: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Rhode Island, and Utah. However, customers in those states can still enjoy our many CBD products!
